のびのびになっているインド旅行記ですが
備忘録として続けたいと思います。
クッチで見つけた寺院の写真です。

トンネルをぬけると不思議な世界

after the tunnel…a wonderland

この部屋の神様は誰だったんだろう
おもいっきりド派手な装飾に、
ピーヒョロと笛だけのトランスっぽい音楽
何も語らず見つめるだけの目
その部屋にいるだけで楽しくなります

i cannot remember what deity this god was
all i remember is psychedelic music
(whistle based) and speechless orange eyes
it sure made me feel happy for no reason

寺院の壁のデコレーションは
すべて壁画です
ヒンズー教の神々の物語が
描かれています

every decoration is painted,
which blew my mind.
most of them are stories
from Hinduism.

カーテンも本物をかけるより
描いてしまうのがインド風です

かと思えばこんなに洗練された
彫刻も。きれいなものもきたないもの
も、同じように扱って、インドの真髄は
ここにあり、と見せつけられたような
気がしました

しぼりの職人、ジャバールのスタジオ
若干２７歳にして、イッセイミヤケさん
からも注文を受けた若手デザイナー

ここで興味深いのが、ドルセと話していた
事なのですが、日本も含め、アジアは比較的
職人の地位はメキシコに比べ高いという事。

けれど、それは職人の男女対比率の割合にも
影響されているのではないかと。つまり、
男性がする職人技の方がやはり高く評価
されてしまうという事なのでしょうか。

余談ですが、私はドルセと違って社会的背景が
ないので、ファブリカをしている時に支援活動
をしているという気持ちは全くありません。

何故メキシコ支援なのか？と聞かれると、作品が
個人の好みなのと、友達のご縁としか答えようが
ありません。でも、才能があるのに他的要素が
原因で認められにくいグループ,作品が安価に
なるケースが存在するのは現実で、実際に現地に
行ってそれを自分の目で確かめるのは楽しいです。

Jabbar, the tie dye artist’s studio.
he is very successful for his beautiful
shibori cloth. nowadays young artist
like him chooses to live in the city and
keep his studio for his work.

Dulce and I had interesting thought exchange.
In Asia, the artisans seem to be more respected
but it could also be because the percentage of
male artisans renowned. hmmm very tricky.

Florence and the Machineが２月１日に
来日するなんてノーマークでした。ショックです！

2011年はシャネルのファッションショーで
パフォーマンスしたフローレンスですが、
彼女は舞台のセットの貝殻に収まっているよりも、
踊って歌っている時に一番カリスマを感じます。

新曲 Shake it Out は、今までの弱さを
ふりかえり（多分彼女が長年苦しんでいるであろう）
アル中との決別の歌だと思われます。

『誰の心の中にも弱さや悪魔は潜んでいるもの。
その悪魔と、訣別出来ないとしても、せめて上手に
一緒にダンスが出来るくらいまでになれたら。』
とインタビューで答えています。

2日目に、カララクシャのジュディーに
紹介されて訪ねたウッドブロックのアジュラク

day 2 in Kutch. we went to visit
ajrakh, the woodblock printer.

ku:nel (クウネル) にも紹介された
草木染めは、本当に手間ひまかけて
作られています。

Ajurakh is hand-printed
one of the oldest types of block printing

下処理、下染め 、防染、色染めを
全て自然材料で作っています。

natural dyes are used on both sides
by a laborious and long process
of resist printing

防染はアカシアの樹脂と石灰
鉄屑、タマリンドなどで色染め

designated areas in the pattern
are pre-treated to resist penetration
by the dye

説明をしてくれたのは人なつこいスフィヤン
井戸に入ったインディゴはトーンによって
濃さも匂いもとろみも違いました

アリザリンに染め、煮染めします
暑い暑いインドの太陽の下で、大きな鍋に
ぐつぐつと１時間、かき回し続けます

Alizarin makes the color tones.
the sun is harsh, but you have to
keep stirring for about an hour.

洗って干してインディゴが
やっと出来上がります

wash and dry. then finally
there is ajrakh.

実際に見るまで、信じられなかった！！
両面印刷はこれらの過程を二重にしています
もちろん裏面を合わせるのも目でいちいち
確かめています。

until I see them with my eyes, I could
not believe they actually align by eyes.
when it’s double sided, the process get
doubled.

縁あって、カトリ一族のパーティーにお招き
いただいたのですが、皆さんのフレンドリーさと
子供たちの笑顔のまぶしさがなんとも素敵！！

by coincidence, we ran into the party
ran by the Khatri. The whole family runs
fabric dying business so the party was
very colorful

ちなみにスフィヤンの子供が見ているのは
キテレツ。インドで人気はクレヨンしんちゃん
クレヨンしんちゃんはメキシコのドルセも大人気って
言ってたしスペイン人もお尻フリフリしてたです

ガンディーダムから、車で１時間半のり、クッチへ。
グジャラート州からインダス河口に及ぶ湿地で、州都はブッジ。
ガイドブックにはあまり出現しない地名

奇しくも10年前に
死者2万人をだした
インド西部大地震の中心地

from Ghandidham we drove about
one and half hour to Kutch.

coincidently, about 10 years
ago they had the huge earthquake

プリヤにカララクシャという職人保護団体を
紹介されたためこの土地を訪ねたのですが
結局、数多く廻ったインド中で私たち
一番のお気に入りの場所になりました

we got referred to Kala Raksha
the artisan village. after Kutch,
we ended up missing so much
of this beautiful place

ここの土地の女性は、美しい民族衣装を
身にまとっていることが多い
結婚するときに自分で作った刺繍を持参する
習慣があるそう

their women are very beautiful.
partly because they have this tradition
which women make special embroidery
for marriage

『若いうちに、目の良いうちに、細かく美しい
刺繍をこしらえて、立派な相手を見つけるのよ！』

these embroideries are done by young girls,
you have to have good eyes to make such
intricate patterns on fabrics

そのせいか？刺繍をする女性たちが見ていたビデオは
誰かの結婚式のビデオ。３分程度のプロモみたいな映像を
リピートで延々と。アニメっぽい蓮の中から旦那さんの
顔が飛び出て来た時には、ドルセと歓声をあげてしまった！

so these girls make exclusive embroideries,
not sure if related, but they were playing
the video of someone’s wedding endlessly.
dulce and I applauded when the animated lotus
opened, and a husband’s face popped up
and smiled!!!

おばちゃまたちが、自慢げにみせてくれた
ビジネスカード。『この象なに？ロゴ？』と言うと、
『そう！！！！ロゴ！！！！！www』
あんた分かってんじゃんとばかりに何やら大ウケ！

ファブリカと同じく、カララクシャでも職人さんたちに
こちらのデザインのノウハウを教えてるみたい
力強く、生き抜くために象のロゴを作ったと教えてくれた

just like Fabrica Social, they get our
design culture knowledge
this is one of their business card with
their original logo.

教室に入った瞬間、どこ国のデザインスクールとも
変わらない匂いがした
気付いたらそれはスティックのりの匂い

the classroom. it smelled like just any other
art school and I couldn’t figure out what it was.
it was a glue stick.

遊牧生活を送ってきたジプシーの歴史が
刻まれたデザインも

some other designs come
from different roots.

メキシコでもインドでも、職人村を訪ねると
感じる安心感、あれは何でしょう
物作りを通すと言葉が分からずとも
国や人種を超えて笑ったり
理解出来たりするのが嬉しいのかも

whether it is mexico or india
the feeling I get in artisan villages is very special.
it feels easy, like something is very universal
within the people who create things.
it sounds pretty corny but it’s true!!

デリーにある魔法が集まる場所、カタプタリ・コロニー。
ところが昨年、インド政府の命令により、スラムの人々は
移動を強制されてしまいます。

前に仕事をさせていただいたプリヤを訪ねに
念願の夢だったインドに『お呼ばれ』した
私とドルセ。

To visit my beloved friend Priya,
Dulce and I decided to start from Bombay.

ボンベイは、手入れのされていない植物が
手入れのされていない建物のまわりを
ぐるぐると取り囲んでいて、ジャングル
みたいで美しかった。

Bombay is the place where
abandoned becomes beautiful,
and beautiful becomes “no big deal”.

出発前に会ったアメリカの旧友に香港経由のウイルスを
うつされ、それが気管支炎に発展しつつも見たボンベイ。
その上排気ガスと湿気のトリプルパンチで
きれいなのに全てがフィルターがかったように
見えた景色

thanks to my old friend who gave me some kind
of virus before i left. i carried his souvenior
throughout my whole trip but in Bombay
I was the sickest.

私がロゴをデザインさせてもらったプリヤの
お店は、インド門とタージマハルホテルの隣にあった
２００８年にムンバイ多発テロがあった金持ちが
密集する場所

Bombay Electric, the store I designed the logo
for was located right next to the Taj Mahal hotel.

ドルセと旅を決めた時、プリヤに
『インドは大きすぎるから計画を立てるなら
テーマを決めた方がいいわよ』とアドバイスされた
欲張りすぎる私たちは、結局範囲を狭める事が
できず「美しいものをみつける旅」と決めた

ボンベイは、いくつかの島から成り立ってる
私たちがボンベイと言う島は本島ではないらしい
それでも私が思い描いてたボンベイで一番
近いイメージがこの写真

インドに行くと、人生が変わると沢山の人が
言ってたけれど、ボンベイでは今イチ、ピンと
来ない。半分に切られた象を道路の真ん中で見ても。

Cut off elephants. who said your life will change
once you are in India? it looks pretty sane to me.

ということで、早々とボンベイを切り上げ、
グジャラートを目指し、ガンティーダム行きの
夜行列車で１５時間の旅へ！！！！

after spending couple of lovely nights with
Priya, we decided to head to Gujarat.
I was overly excited to take 15 hours
overnight train to Ghandidam that night.
